Alaska-British Columbia

May 1997

Six-week sea kayaking trip from Prince Rupert to Vancouver Island, about 370 miles, down the coast of British Columbia, including open water crossings, big 4-5 meter swell, surf landings, and almost continuous rain. I learned a lot about staying dry–umbrellas, large parachute tarp, pitching tarps over your tent, rubber boots and rain gear.

Camp priorities: stay dry, stay warm, stay out of the wind
High winds, exposed rocky coasts, open water all contribute to big surf, which made surf landings challenging and even dangerous with 250 lbs. of food and gear
We checked out a local Haida community wood carver, making beautiful traditional wooden paddles and boats

Ashore, tidal ranges in this area are some of the largest in the world, with the difference between high and low tide up to 20 feet
Open water paddling, swell could be 4-5 meters
