Iceland

June/July 2002

Two-week ski traverse of the northernmost mountains in Iceland, the Trollskagi Range, in June/July 2002.  Featured in Couloir Magazine (now unfortunately out of business).

The area is only 1/4 degree of latitude below the Arctic Circle.  We were there during the summer solstice, so we had 24 hours of light every day.  You could ski from a mountain peak all the way down to the ocean’s edge.  This was before the travel boom to Iceland, and before guide services.  We met up with Bergud and Avi, two Icelandic guys we had met while traveling in Chile (the portrayal in Eli Roth’s horror movie Hostel was spot on).  We also got to drive the Ring Road, see some glaciers and geysers, and hot springs, and explore some out-of-the-way valleys and sights.
